Title changes and plans to return home

Athena is the only daughter of Prince Joachim and Princess Marie and is tenth in line to the throne. When she was 10, Queen Margrethe removed her princess title to allow the grandchildren greater freedom from formal royal duties. The family moved to the U.S., and Princess Marie told Danish magazine BILLED-BLADET in February 2026 that they expect to move back to Denmark after Joachim’s posting ends in August 2027 so the children can finish their schooling.
