On Aug. 20 the first lady spoke from the White House Rose Garden about her Fostering the Future initiative and plans to expand its national network. She announced the expansion will be supported by a $2 million donation from IndyCar and Fox Corporation to fund scholarships at Indiana University and Purdue University. Melania opened with, "Good afternoon. I heard you missed me?" and followed with, "Here I am."
Her return followed a 32-day absence from public view; she was last photographed at the FIFA World Cup final July 19 at MetLife Stadium alongside President Donald Trump and their sons Barron and Eric. The president drew boos at the event as the family watched the Spain-Argentina match from a suite with FIFA president Gianni Infantino and Robert Kraft. She also missed several high-profile events, including the rescheduled White House Correspondents' Dinner on July 24.
