What went down

Reporters say more than 60 trees, among them historic cherry trees and sycamores, were removed from East Potomac Golf Links in the weeks after President Trump announced a Sept. 1 renovation start. By Aug. 27, no design renderings, construction timetable or budget had been made public, and officials hadn’t confirmed any park closures.

Officials respond

The Interior Department told outlets the work was routine maintenance: arborists allegedly removed hazardous, invasive or dying trees that couldn’t be restored, and staff monitor trees for visitor safety.
