Specimens of Swiftiephylus were gathered by American Museum of Natural History and Australian teams between 1995 and 2004 as part of a vast haul of over 50,000 insects. Scientists note millions more species likely remain undocumented. Swiftiephylus joins the Miridae family, the largest group of true bugs with about 11,000 described species worldwide.

A scientific tradition

The tribute follows other pop-culture namings from UCR researchers, including a 2022 nematode honoring actor Jeff Daniels.
